Who Better Than You?

  • Listening to... Action News

Homeroom: Mr. Cullen gave me a piece of paper that was a printout of an email with the words highlighted that instructed him to send me to Mrs. Farrow's office.  So I was strolling down the Core when Mrs. Farrow came on the announcements and I had to stop and stand for the flag salute.  Then I continued on my way and entered the Principal's Office.  I told the secretary that I was asked to come down and showed her the letter.  She said, "Erin, right?"  And I was like yeah.  So I waited around and then Mrs. Farrow returned and she asked me into her office.  She asked me if I had spoken at the faculty meeting about Relay for Life, or something, and I said, "Noo..."  And she said that she didn't think I did since she didn't think I looked like the person she was looking for.  So I said okay and wished her luck in finding the right girl.  Then I returned to homeroom and Mr. Cullen was disappointed that I was not the person they were looking for since he thought I was going to get a special recognition or something.

1st Period, Sociology: Mrs. LaRosa did not want to teach something new so she just put in Family Guy.  I helped Ingrid write four lines of a poem about Michael Jackson for her English class.

2nd Period, Advanced Pre-Calculus: We just went over the HSPA practice test.  I got all of the multiple choice right and I think my open-ended were good.  Except for one of them I read the question wrong.

3rd Period, Honors Physics: Mr. McBride talked sporadically throughout the period to me about being a chemistry teacher.  He was very happy and excited.  He said that they're always in need of good physical science teachers.  The assignment was a vocab-ish worksheet about Chapters 17 and 18.

4th Period, ASSEMBLY: I met Molly in C-Hall and we entered the 11/12 auditorium.  C-Way was nowhere in sight so we just stood around with people from our class and then eventually we sat down.  C-Way showed up later and he sat somewhere else and then we had to go over to sit near him.  Fred Spiegel was the guest author.  He is a Holocaust survivor and wrote Once the Acacias Bloomed: Memories of a Childhood Lost.  I feel terrible for saying that I got bored.  Maybe I just have a bad attention span.  Afterwards, Kyle and I each bought one of his books for $10 (normally $15.95) and he signed it for us.  To Erin, Fred Spiegel March 2007.

5th Period, Honors English: Kyle and I showed up slightly late for class and Mr. Lawler made us pick a card, any card at all.  I got one with a green smiley face sticker.  My group for the The Old Man and the Sea discussion questions consisted of Kristen, Jillian, and Anna Lee.  We discussed Santiago's relationship with the sea and other stuff.  Then we had to evacuate around 11:30.  Kyle eventually brought all of his stuff and then we gathered sort of near Mr. Lawler's BMW.  Then we all pioneered to the stadium.  However, I do not understand the point of taking attendance at the fire drill site when everyone got separated on the way.  We stood around the visitors' bleachers for a while and then we wound up in the baseball bleachers with the other cool cat teachers like Mr. Wright, O-Man, Grosshombre, and Cooler Schuler.  Anna Lee texted Kyle and she and the rest of the class were at the 20-yard line.  Some loser kid was attempting to smoke and it was obvious.  Mr. Wright got really steamed and demanded to know who the "asshole" was and that he's "not stupid" (which is super-duperly true).  I said afterwards, "Mr. Wright owns."  Kyle and Lillyan analyzed the symbolism of my shoelaces, and we determined that the shorter one indicated it was the "road less traveled."  Later I put my books down on the bleachers and since it was windy my papers blew everywhere.  I said, "I knew I was holding them for a reason."  Mr. O danced some.  Lillyan, Jillian, and Mary K. looked through my copy of Fred Spiegel's book.  We finally returned to the building around five of 1.  Mr. Lawler called, since educational decisions revolve around food and buses, that 8th period would be dropped and we would have a shortened 6th and 7th.  He called for 1:05 to 1:35 for 6th, and 1:40 to 2:10 for 7th, except when it was about 1:03 he changed the first one to 1:10 to 1:35.  And it was that.  And we all cheered wildly and crazily it was silly.  Mr. Lawler also told us that there was no better class with which to evacuate.

6th Period, Spanish Advanced: Sra. Dagostino gave us the test that took three minutes.  I think I messed one up but that's okay.  Then Cecilia showed us how to make a smoothie.

On the way to 7th period, I stopped into Holmes's room and said, "It's been a very strange day."  He agreed.  Then he became happy that there was no 8th period and seemed amazed that he was done for the day.  I exclaimed, "No Callaway test!"  And we discussed how teachers who intended to test that day were in trouble about when they were going to administer the test because next week is all messed up schedules due to HSPA.  I also told him about how yesterday I got Koosh to change the day of our papers just by asking, "Are you sure you want the paper to be due tomorow?"  He said that I've been having some good luck and he hopes it keeps going.  Then I left and Mr. Wright was in the hallway and he said to me and I pointed and said, "I'm taking AP Physics next year."  He talked much as I was walking away and then I turned around and walked back because he was still talking to me and he shook my hand and said either "You're one of us" or "You're part of the club."  He also apologized for his outburst during the bomb scare.

7th Period, AP History of Art: We got the review packet for the test that is next Wednesday and Thursday.  Mary said to me that she went into C-Way's room and exclaimed, "Guess whose test I don't have to take today!"  And he was all Get out!  It sounded funny.  I told Mary that we've got to read the supplemental readings this time.  We continued with the Renaissance and I talked about Titian's Venus of Urbino.  We talked about one Proto-Baroque piece and next week on Monday we are going to do Mannerism.

Then we went to SURE after some meandering.  Kate really wanted to tell me something on the way except she was afraid that Mr. Holmes was around and he would hear, and she wanted to wait till we got to SURE to tell me.  Then she forgot to tell me and I had to ask because it sounded juicy.  It was about his "physique" she had said on the way and so it sure sounded good.  Anyway, she said that he said something about always carrying around all his books and that was why he was "huge."  Only he is not huge and in fact is a scrawny little man so that's why it's hilarious.  I said later to Kate, That's how we describe him: Scrawny.  Looks 15.  Emotionally unstable.  And then she added, "unstable in general," since from her perspective as his student this year he always seems to be sick and therefore never wants to teach so they watch lots of videos.  At SURE, we did not really do anything.  While I was away at my locker putting away books that I did not know why I had on me, Tina had written a list of food we should get for the coffeehouse.  Soft pretzels, brownies, and large Pixie Stix surely will sell.  Freshman year the Pixie Stix went FAST.  Last coffeehouse really only the brownies sold.  And pretzels are great.  She also wrote down "a TON of water," since that's the drink to drink.  It is a very good list and I am proud of my fellow Wanderers.  Later Mr. O was talking to us about doing more stuff like presentations and such.  I said that it would be "absolutely doable" and Tina and Kate seemed to agree (as did one of the Thirds).  Then a man in an orange shirt showed up and Mr. O explained that we are the Girls Who Wander.  He takes much pride in us.  It is flattering.  Afterwards we left and I think Tina and Trina missed their late bus again but fortunately Kate said her dad could give them a ride.
